Venice, Florence and Rome, linked by Italy’s high-speed rail network, is close to the default first-time Italy itinerary — and one of the more mobile-data-dependent trips a visitor can plan, since tickets, seat maps and platform changes increasingly live entirely inside an app rather than on paper. Knowing where that data holds up and where it briefly doesn’t makes the whole trip smoother.
The route, and how it’s normally ridden
Frecciarossa and Italo, Italy’s two high-speed operators, both run frequent direct services connecting Venice Santa Lucia, Florence Santa Maria Novella and Rome’s Termini and Tiburtina stations, with the Venice-Florence leg and the Florence-Rome leg each taking a bit over two hours at cruising speed. Most visitors book Rome first for the flight in, then work north to Florence and Venice, or the reverse — either direction crosses the same infrastructure, so the connectivity picture is identical either way.
Where the signal holds up well
Inside all three cities, and for the flatter stretches of track between them, coverage from Italy’s main networks — TIM, Vodafone and WindTre — is generally strong, LTE throughout and 5G common near the stations and city centres. Boarding, checking a seat reservation, pulling up a hotel confirmation while the train is still in the station: all of that works the way it would at home. The one indoor exception worth knowing is that a hotel room deep inside a centuries-old building in Venice’s calli or Florence’s historic centre can have a noticeably weaker signal than the street outside — a function of old, thick stone walls rather than of network coverage along the route.
Where it briefly doesn’t: the Apennine tunnels
The one genuinely predictable gap sits on the Florence-Rome leg, more specifically its northern portion between Florence and Bologna, where the high-speed line runs through a long series of tunnels cut through the Apennine mountains. Signal drops for stretches of several minutes at a time on every network while the train is underground — this is a tunnel problem, not a carrier problem, and no SIM changes it. It comes back on its own the moment the train surfaces, generally without needing to toggle anything.

Planning around the gap rather than fighting it
The practical fix is simple and doesn’t require any special settings: download anything you’ll need mid-journey — offline maps for the next city, a ticket QR code, an ebook or a downloaded playlist — before boarding, while still on station Wi-Fi or a strong signal. Treat the tunnel stretch the way you’d treat a short flight: assume no connection for a few minutes, and nothing about the trip actually requires one during that window, since the train itself needs no input from your phone. The two operators run the same physical tracks and hit the same tunnels, so the underground signal gap is identical whichever you book. The practical difference for connectivity is on board rather than in the tunnels: both offer complimentary Wi-Fi in most classes, useful as a backup on the open stretches but not a substitute for a working mobile connection through the tunnels themselves, since onboard Wi-Fi generally drops at the same moments the phone signal does — it rides on the same external connection. Ticket apps for both operators work offline once a ticket is downloaded, which is worth doing at the station rather than assuming a QR code will load on demand mid-journey.
Stations, and the last mile at each end
Venice Santa Lucia sits directly on the Grand Canal with no metro or long walk needed to reach the historic centre, while Florence Santa Maria Novella and Rome’s Termini both sit within easy walking or short-taxi distance of their respective old towns. None of the three stations poses a connectivity problem in itself; the relevant last-mile issue is what comes after — a Venice hotel reached only on foot through narrow calli, or a Florence apartment tucked behind a courtyard, where the historic-centre signal weakening mentioned above is more likely to show up than anywhere on the train itself.
