Italy eSIM on iPhone: Install and Setup Guide
Install an Italy eSIM on iPhone over Wi-Fi before you fly: the iOS menus that keep moving, the one roaming toggle, and what a data-only line cannot do.

The reason to sort this out before you fly is the EU border, not your carrier’s price list — unless you live in the EU yourself. Under the bloc’s roam-like-at-home rules, an EU resident already uses their own data plan in Italy at no extra cost, and does not need an eSIM at all. For visitors from outside the EU — the US, the UK since Brexit, most of Asia — Italy sits outside any roam-like-home zone, and the home carrier’s normal out-of-region rate applies, often the priciest band on the sheet. The alternative on arrival is thin too: airport Wi-Fi stops at the terminal door, and Italian law requires a photo ID for any prepaid SIM sold in a shop, tourist or resident.
A prepaid data eSIM takes that decision out of the trip. Buy a plan in the Italy eSIM app, install a second line alongside the SIM you already use, and switch it on when you land — the install over Wi-Fi first, then two settings on arrival: the eSIM as your data line, and Data Roaming on for that line alone. Validity starts at the first connection to an Italian network rather than at purchase, so installing early costs nothing. Hotspot is included, useful for a laptop in a hotel or a group sharing one connection on a train.

Two things we would rather you knew before buying. The plan is data-only, so it gives you no Italian phone number — most visitors never notice, though a rental desk or occasionally a clinic may want a local callback number, and a data eSIM has none to give. Your own number rides along on your own SIM and stays reachable. The second is coverage: excellent in the cities, along the autostrade and through most towns, and thinner in parts of the Alps, the Dolomites and a few smaller islands. Installation steps

Step 1
Buy your plan in the Italy eSIM app
Choose the plan that fits your trip and pay in the app. The QR code and manual activation details appear under the order and stay there, so a failed first attempt costs nothing.

Step 2
Install while you are still on home Wi-Fi
The profile downloads over the internet, the one thing an arrivals hall at Fiumicino or Malpensa will not reliably hand you. Being early costs no plan time: validity starts at the line's first connection to an Italian network, not when you pay.

Step 3
Open Settings and find the cellular menu
Tap Settings, then the cellular entry. Apple has renamed this more than once: depending on iOS version and region it reads Cellular, Mobile Data or Mobile Service. All three open the same screen, so go by position rather than wording.

Tap Add eSIM, then Use QR Code
Recent iOS labels the button Add eSIM; older releases say Add Cellular Plan or Add Data Plan. Take the QR code option, not Transfer From Nearby iPhone, which moves a line you already own between handsets. Scan from a second screen, or tap Enter Details Manually and copy the SM-DP+ address and activation code across.

Step 5
Label the line, then leave it switched off
Name it Italy or Travel so the dual-line screens read clearly, and keep your usual SIM as the default for calls. Then disable the new line until you land; nothing is consumed while it sits there.

Step 6
Switch it on after you land
On the ground, reopen the cellular menu, select the Italy eSIM line, turn it on and set it as the line carrying data. Check which line you are editing before you toggle anything, especially if this is the first second line you have ever added.

Step 7
Turn Data Roaming on for the Italy eSIM line only
Open the Italy eSIM line and switch Data Roaming on. That toggle is how iOS lets a line use a network it does not belong to, which is exactly what a travel plan does; it adds nothing to a prepaid Italy plan. Check it is still off on your home SIM, where it genuinely would cost you — unless your home plan already covers the EU, in which case leave it as your carrier configured it.

Step 8
If nothing appears, force a fresh search
The phone normally finds an Italian partner network by itself a minute or two after landing. If not, toggle Airplane mode. Still nothing: open Network Selection, turn Automatic off, pick an available network — TIM, Vodafone or WindTre — let it register, then set selection back to Automatic.
Troubleshooting
Do I get an Italian phone number with this?
No. The plan is data-only, so there is no Italian number on it and no way to add one. Your own number stays on your own SIM and keeps working for calls and texts. Most visitors never miss it; where one insists on a local callback number — a car rental desk, occasionally a clinic — there is no workaround beyond a local SIM.
Do I even need this if I live in the EU?
Probably not. Under the EU's roam-like-at-home rules, an EU-resident visitor already uses their home data plan in Italy at no extra cost. This eSIM is built for travellers from outside the EU — the US, the UK since Brexit, most of Asia — whose home carrier has no such agreement with Italy.
Will I have signal everywhere in the country?
In cities, along the autostrade and in most towns, yes, and coverage there is excellent. It thins out in parts of the Alps, the Dolomites and a few smaller islands — a fact about where the towers are, not about your SIM. A thick stone wall in a centuries-old palazzo or a Venetian calle can also weaken a signal indoors regardless of tower distance.
The QR code will not scan.
Raise the brightness on the screen showing the code, hold the iPhone 20-30 cm back, and get the whole square in frame without glare. If it still will not read, tap Enter Details Manually and copy the SM-DP+ address and activation code from your order — the same line results either way.
There is no Add eSIM option, or I get eSIM Cannot Be Added.
Open Settings, General, About and look for an EID. If one is listed, the hardware is fine and the obstacle is a carrier lock — ask your operator to unlock the handset, far easier before you fly. No EID at all means the iPhone predates eSIM and needs a physical SIM.
I have landed and the eSIM shows no service.
Check in order that the line is on, selected for cellular data, and has Data Roaming enabled. Then toggle Airplane mode. If it stays blank, turn off automatic network selection, choose a network by hand, and switch automatic back on once it registers.
